My name is Dr. Richard Vollmer. My research started when I found an article on the internet. I was very interested in the sleep problems in patients. I wanted to have a solution. I decided to go to sleep clinic in my country, Germany. I found several articles about sleep medicine, but the ones I was interested in were not good, for example: one that said sleep deprivation is bad. I realized that I had to study further and do a sleep study. So I did the study. The first thing I found is that there is no evidence to show that sleeping badly helps to increase the amount of REM sleep. I decided to get sleep studies done. After one year, I had enough results for me to publish a book about them. The next step was to have more subjects, for my sleep research. I wanted to investigate different types of sleep disorders, like insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, sleep paralysis, and sleeping in bed with a heavy chest. I started with sleep apnea. Most of people who suffer from this sleep disorder wake up at night with the thought "What will I do next?", and that is very unpleasant.
